TDP Weekly Review | Round 2

Another busy week for our sides with some good competitive action on display. The coaches focussed on set pieces as part of last week's syllabus with this week's topic being 1v1 duels, both in an attacking and defensive sense. We had a mixed set of results but all teams involved in close competitive games with the biggest difference in margin came as our U13 Mixed won 4-1. Our U15 Regional side also started their season with a great 2-1 victory. Looking forward to an exciting triple header vs Island Bay at Alex Moore turf this Sunday, whilst our U14's are away to Miramar. Good luck to all involved! - Tate Macpherson (DoF)

CDL U13 Mixed - Mark Gilchrist & Chris Bailey

Good 4-1 result today against the Phoenix U16 Women’s team.A turnover in front of goal and some good pressure from the Phoenix had us falling behind early in the game. However, the team showed real character, gradually wrestling control of the game away from the Phoenix. The team started to find space on the wings, converted a classic strikers goal after a breakaway on the right, denied a scorcher of a shot with a fingertip save, to finish the first half at 1-1. The second half was all about ONW, with the opposition goalkeeper putting her body on the line several times to deny a relentless attack. Two scorching goals from midfield runs and a penalty sealed the game. 4-1.POTM: Monty for breaking the game open.Notable mention to Ryan (GK) for some great saves and good distribution.

Captain's game report from Grace Foley:After a week of horrible wind and weather, it cleared up for us at Petone Memorial Park, where we played Petone. From kick off, this was a challenging game that really tested us and forced us to work harder as a team. Everyone did an amazing job. We held our own and really pushed them hard in the second half.In the first half, we had some opportunities and scored one great goal. We kept the pressure on and made them work hard. In the second half, we did some great work on attack, and our defensive line was very strong. Everyone did a good job at looking for options and getting the ball out wide.I believe everyone should be proud of how they played today. It was a great game, I'm sure it was entertaining to watch.

Next match - Sunday 11th 9am vs Miramar Rangers AFC U14 @ St Pats Town

CDL U15 Mixed - Steve Fullelove & Jeremy Young

Captains match report from Connor O'Shaughnessy:We fell 3-1 to Phoenix Women in a well-fought match that showed plenty of promise. Jamie gave us the lead in the first half with a composed finish after some good build up play. Although Phoenix equalised before halftime, we went into the second half with our heads up, confident in our performance so far.Unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain the same intensity after halftime. Missed 50/50 challenges and a few lapses in focus gave Phoenix the openings they needed to score twice more, with a goal at the back post and a through ball, and that allowed them to take control of the game.Despite the result, there were many positives to take from the performance especially in the first half and we’ll look to build on that in our next game. My players of the match were Jamie and Jaivant. They did really well to come into the team and make a positive impact. For our next game, I think that we should focus on improving our body positioning while defending, and defensively setting up on counter attacks and free kicks as that was how we conceded our goals. I don’t think that we deserved to lose today, but credit to the phoenix women because they are a strong side. But good job everyone, I thought we fought really hard today, and thanks to the coaches, referee and parents for their support.

Regional U15 Mixed - Arun Lamb & Oli Davies

U15 Regional started strongly in their game vs Upper Hutt, with an early goal from a well worked team move. Our midfield set up well to win the ball back consistently in the attacking third, and picked the right moment to play Noah (our 7) through on goal (1-0). After a confident 15 minutes, controlling possession and limiting Upper Hutt’s attacking threat, we tried to force a ball forward, and got caught in transition (1-1). Conceding the equaliser shortly before half time didn’t knock morale too hard, as we started the second half strongly controlling possession again and nullifying any threats. After a string of Upper Hutt possessions, we won a goal kick, where our defense calmly played out of a fast press and played James I. through up the left wing. Beating his man he cut across to Lincoln M. who curled a shot top right, putting us 2-1 up. For the final 20 minutes we successfully staved off Upper Hutt who were pinning us further and further back, with a high backline and 2 strong DMs. In the final few plays of the game we successfully defended a corner where Upper Hutt had their whole side including a GK in or around our box.. Very happy with our start to the season! Players should be proud of each of their individual performances, it was an emphatic team victory and achieved through communication and collaboration.

Next match - Sunday 11th 10:00am vs UHCF U15 Panthers @ Harcourt 1

CDL U16 Girls - Kimberly Fiszer & Tate Macpherson

3-1 loss to Upper HuttAnother good test for the girls, and opposite to last week, the girls started strongly. We had some great combinations in wide areas, especially down our left hand side in which AJ, Eva & Ella H were a constant threat through the first half. Our goal came after a direct passage of play as Kris ran onto a nice defence splitting pass into the channel before the ball was played across goal and into Ella Hs feet who finished well. The girls continued to battle after that and we were very impressed with the physicality shown by all players as they looked to up the tempo.Unfortunately we did begin to tire which was expected due to missing a number of key personnel but we couldn’t question the effort of the group. They began to get on top and we struggled to match this pace and fell behind to a few very good goals from their number 9 (one of the league's strongest players).

Key positives - Use of wide areas and combinations. Attitude to get on the ball and not hide. Confidence to go into 1v1 duels with good physicality.Areas to work on - Build up when we decide to go long. Passes through central areas (patterns). Communication.Overall good stuff, we are proud of the progress we are making.POTM - Olivia Anderson - Great work both on and off the ball and covered teammates with strong running & great decision making.
